Before Disney, Marriot and Chili's took a foothold, there was a 42nd Street that was rich with flavor. It featured the everyday spectacle of real New Yorkers.
Home to more theaters on one block then anywhere else in the world, "the Deuce" was a magnet for the kooks and the crazies, but also the mother and son who wanted to catch a $3 double feature. It was home to many peep shows and sex clubs, but also Tad's $2.99 steak dinner and Hubert's Flea Circus (where Diane Arbus photographed in the 1960s).
The photographs have been exhibited at O.K Harris Works of Art, The Butler Institute of Art and most recently A.M. Richard Fine Art. Here are some pictures from those days.
